Toorak House

The project

Muted tones and natural materials

The existing single storey brick house in Irving Road, no longer met the needs of our client. Our brief was to add a first floor and to refurbish the ground floor. The first floor includes a living room and adjoining gym, 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. The north facing first floor terrace stretches across the facade creating a balanced symmetry with the existing house. The ground refurbishment focuses living areas and views to the northern courtyard and includes a completely new kitchen, living room and new amenities to the master bedroom. The new en-suite divides the ‘his’ and ‘hers’ dressing rooms.

The contemporary approach to the interiors now defines all parts of the house, featuring warm, muted tones and natural materials that provide warmth to the rooms and innovative lighting solutions that illuminate key surfaces. There is now an easy flow from the living areas of the house to the north facing courtyard with pool.

The en-suite to the main bedroom is designed in understated warm, muted tones that reflect the design sensibilities of the existing house. The space is generous to comfortably cater for the bathing and grooming needs. The white bath in front of the feature stone wall sets up a striking figure / ground composition within the bathroom. The stone is silver travertine which is vein (straight) cut in slabs and fixed to walls. Privacy is maintained within the bathroom with the use of steel framed glazed partitions which defines the WC and shower.

The ‘hers’ dressing room is divided into summer and winter. The hanging rails vary to accommodate jackets, shirts and slacks. The ‘his’ is not forgotten with custom made tie rack cabinets, grooming mirror and vertical shoe cupboard.
